Why human coaching delivers better ROI than AI for mid-career growth

What I'm covering in this newsletter:
You’re experienced enough to know what you don’t want… but maybe not entirely sure what comes next. You’ve climbed the career ladder, achieved, learned, supported others, stretched yourself – and yet there’s still a nagging sense that there could be more.
And now that AI tools are being used by everyone, promising instant answers, 24/7 guidance, and “personal development on demand” then it begs the question:
Why invest in a human coach when AI seems cheaper, faster, and always available?
I’m not against AI. I use AI to help with the tasks I’d ask an assistant, or a colleague to help with, if I had one. AI is incredibly useful. But it can only help at a surface level.
If you require personal development which shifts your mindset, clarifies your goals, gives you confidence, creates greater self-awareness, strengthens your identity, and unlocks real career progression, then nothing beats the return on investment (ROI) than working with a trained and qualified human coach.
A coach who can see you, observe your body language, challenge you, and champion you, will never be replaced by technology.
The hidden cost of career plateau
Mid-career drift is real. I hear clients say:
“I’m successful on paper but something’s missing.”
“I’ve hit a ceiling and I don’t know how to break through.”
“I’m doing everything I should be doing, but I still feel stuck.”
“I’ve lost my confidence… and that scares me.”
“I can support others to get ahead in their careers but I don’t seem able to help myself.”
If you’re feeling any of these things, you are not alone. These moments don’t come from a lack of skill, intelligence or ambition, they come from the incredibly normal experience of evolving professionally while life also gets fuller, busier, and more complex.
And this is where the ROI of human coaching comes to the fore.
Because the cost of staying stuck is enormous:
Missed opportunities
Stagnant earnings
Erosion of confidence
Decline in well-being
Feeling disconnected from your work
Misaligned with your values
And it’s important to act on those nagging feelings, because it’s your career, your life, your time. You spend a large proportion of time at work. And you don’t get that time back.
So the question you should be asking is “What’s the most effective support to get me where I want to go?”
I asked What do you primarily use AI for in your personal development?
As you can see from the table below, people are using AI for productivity and time management and it can be very useful, particularly if you are time-constrained. But the results can be very mixed and, of course, are limited.
Learning new skills | 7% |
Career planning/guidance | 14% |
Productivity & time management | 43% |
I don’t use AI in this way | 36% |
AI vs human coaching - what’s the difference in practice?
AI is brilliant for:
Quick answers
Self-reflection prompts
Drafting plans
Providing structure
Helping you organise your thinking
But AI cannot:
Read your energy
Hold space for emotional nuance
Challenge you compassionately
Spot blindspots you don’t know you have
Identify patterns in your behaviour
Hold you accountable
Respond to your tone, hesitations, or contradictions
Coach the whole human with real-time intuition
So what is the ROI of choosing a professional coach - especially in the mid-career years when the stakes are highest and your personal context is richest.

The real ROI of human coaching (that AI can’t replicate)
Here are the areas where a human coach dramatically outperforms AI, delivering returns that compound long after the sessions end.
1. Outcome ROI: Better decisions, faster progress
In mid-career, your decisions carry weight - salary, wellbeing, identity, family, future security.
A coach helps you:
untangle complex decisions
evaluate options objectively
avoid costly mistakes
move from thinking to action
stay focused on what truly matters
AI can outline possibilities.A coach helps you choose courageously and support and challenge you as you make progress.
2. Mindset ROI: Building confidence, resilience and self-belief
AI can give you 'affirmations'. A coach helps you believe them.
Through reflective dialogue, a trained coach can:
challenge limiting beliefs
quiet your inner critic
build psychological flexibility
develop neuroplasticity
strengthen emotional resilience
help you trust your instincts
identify patterns in your behaviour and language (body and verbal)
empower you to think bigger
This is not a one-way information transfer. A coaching relationship is built on trust and rapport. It’s a relationship that helps you grow into a stronger, more grounded version of yourself.
A coach can move you from feelings of negativity and self-doubt to gaining confidence and happiness.
3. Accountability ROI: Turning intentions into real-life change
You can tell AI: “I want to update my CV” every day for six months.
It won’t nudge you.
It won’t ask why you haven't done it.
It won’t explore the fear behind the procrastination.
A coach will.
Accountability is where momentum is built. It’s where goals stop being abstract and start becoming tangible results.
4. Emotional ROI: Being seen, supported and understood
AI will never really “get” you. While it can mimic empathy, it doesn’t know what it feels like to:
dread Mondays
worry about age or relevance
be overlooked
carry invisible workload
feel undervalued despite giving everything
doubt yourself during mid-career transitions
A coach will listen and observe you without judgment and without an agenda. You get:
a safe space
a sounding board
emotional validation
perspective
a human who holds hope when you’ve temporarily misplaced yours
These things are real. They’re the foundations of courage, clarity, and growth.
5. Career ROI: Real progression, aligned with who you are now
AI can help you write goals. A coach helps you design a career that is tailored to you and your needs.
Together you’ll work on:
refining your strengths
positioning your experience
elevating your presence
crafting a compelling narrative
navigating workplace dynamics
preparing for promotions
exploring what’s next - without fear
Personal development isn’t just about “fixing” things. It’s about uncovering what’s possible for you and challenging you to see what others can see in you.
6. Time ROI: Progress that compounds for life
When you work with a coach, the insights you gain don’t just end there. You take them into every promotion, leadership role, and opportunity for the rest of your career. You have tips, tools and strategies to help you remain resilient and continue to thrive in challenging situations.
It’s like learning a new way of thinking, or gaining new muscle memory. A new inner posture.
A new level of confidence.
Your investment keeps working long after the sessions end.
What this means for you
If you are a mid-career professional feeling:
stuck
under-challenged
overwhelmed
unsure of your next step
ready for more but not sure how to get there
Then investing in personalised, human coaching is still the most powerful, direct and reliable way to create meaningful change.
AI will be able to enhance parts of your progress, but it won’t replace the depth, intuition, and transformation that happens in a trusted, professional partnership.
If you’re ready to unlock clarity, confidence and career momentum, I offer coaching programmes designed specifically for ambitious, experienced, and those ready for a next chapter that feels aligned and exciting.
I will provide you with structured methods, compassionate challenge, and a warm, human partnership that helps you move forward towards your career goals.
Ready to explore what’s possible?
You’re invited to book a complimentary discovery call to talk through:

How AI can work hand in hand with professional coaching
Your next chapter could begin with our next conversation. There's no pressure but an opportunity for you to talk through what might be possible. In 2026 I'm running a 6-week programme which incorporates both AI and coaching.

I hope to speak to you soon!
